How inclusive is your business?
Around 15 per cent of the population identify as neurodivergent and can offer many different strengths to improve your business performance, yet many don’t feel safe enough to disclose their neurodivergence to their employer. See our advice to help your business be more inclusive.
Practical tips to assist you in being more inclusive are:
- Provide education and awareness training to all staff members to better understand neurodivergent individuals’ needs and strengths, reduce stigma and misunderstandings, and create a more accepting work environment.
- Offer workplace adjustments so they can perform at their best and reduce stress and anxiety such as flexible schedules, quiet workplaces, noise cancelling headphones, alternative communication methods, and additional time to process information.
- Share diversity stories to help build a culture of acceptance and inclusion.
- Nurture staff networks, recruit champions within your organisation and ensure resources are allocated to support staff networks.
- Make systems accessible including recruitment processes, workplace employment policies, performance management processes, and inclusion strategies.
- Don’t make assumptions. Every person is unique so take the time to learn about neurodivergence in general.
- Develop a Disability Inclusion Plan that encompasses your entire workforce.
