Proposed Extension of Community Services Sector Portable Long Service Leave

long service leave

September 2015

In response to the ACT Government’s Proposed Extension of the Long Service Leave Act 2009 (ACT)

Introduction

The Canberra Business Chamber is an employer organisation representing approximately 1,000 organisations and businesses in the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding region. Members of the Chamber are typically small to medium sized businesses and community organisations, with a significant number of members falling within the scope of the current schemes operating in the ACT jurisdiction including the community sector, the security and building and construction sectors, the contract cleaning industry and the child care sector.

This submission is in response to a proposal that the current scheme be extended the Aged Care and Waste Disposal sectors in the ACT

In its previous submissions on this matter notably the detailed submission offered in July 2008, the Chamber’s position was that the extension of the scheme to the Community Services sector presented a number of undesirable consequences for that sector. It was argued that it is important to recognise these consequences before proceeding with the Scheme. The Chamber’s position on a further extension of the Scheme to the Aged Care and Waste Disposal sectors is that such a decision cannot be justified and will be formally opposed by the Chamber.
