Canberra Business Chamber welcomes the memorandum of understanding between the ACT and NSW governments as an important plank in cohesively moving the region forward.

“The Canberra Region is just that – a region consisting of, not divided into, many towns and centres that are working hard together to improve outcomes for the whole,” Canberra Business Chamber CEO, Robyn Hendry said.

“We have long advocated for measures that build up the whole region, because the success of us all relies on us acting as a single entity. Businesses, customers and visitors are being encouraged to see all the region has to offer and look past borders.”

The Chamber is actively promoting regional tourism and products from around the region to national and international markets. Combined, the Canberra Region offers visitors an array of possibilities including the opportunity to see national institutions, swim at the coast, have a snow holiday, enjoy amazing natural wonders, participate in outdoor activities, and experience world-class food and wine.

“The MoU signed on Friday, shows governments are also recognising the need for a collaborative approach to ‘region’ building’,” Ms Hendry said.

“With international flights now taking off in Canberra and improved regional connections, such as FlyPelican’s recent announcement of daily flights between Canberra and Dubbo, Canberra can act as a freight and transport hub for the region.

“However, we must have real connectivity. It has to be easy for people and goods to travel between Canberra Merimbula, Yass, Goulburn, Orange, Moruya, Dubbo, Young, Wagga and everywhere in between.

“Therefore, we are very pleased the MoU covers improving transport links across the border, joint funding of economic modelling of freight opportunities across the region, development of an economic development guide for the region, and support for a regional website and regional tourism product being developed in partnership by Visit Canberra and Destination NSW.”
