New international carrier for Canberra welcome
Canberra Business Chamber welcomes the announcement that Qatar Airways will begin to fly between Canberra and Doha in 2017.
“It says a lot about Canberra’s growth and reputation, that Qatar Airways has chosen Canberra as a key service hub in Australia,” Canberra Business Chamber CEO, Robyn Hendry said.
“I would like to congratulate Canberra Airport and the ACT Government on their ongoing hard work to secure international flights for the national capital.”
Earlier this year, the Chamber asked businesses which connections they believe would be most valuable in creating trade and investment opportunities. A number nominated the Middle East as a key market.
“Since it started in September, we have seen strong demand for the Singapore Airlines flights between Canberra and Singapore and demand for Canberra Wellington is building,” Ms Hendry said. “And this service has certainly opened up new opportunities for Canberra businesses and forged closer ties between the three cities.
“The Chamber has recently signed Memorandums of Understanding with our equivalent in both Wellington and Singapore. These agreements are designed to help local businesses seek out new customers in these regions.”
“We are confident the Qatar Airways flights will similarly further open Middle East markets for Canberra businesses and boost our visitor economy by encouraging more people to visit our beautiful region for work and play.”
