Local Producers Have Chance to Showcase Goods to the World

MEDIA RELEASE

Canberra Region businesses are being offered an exciting opportunity to showcase their products to the world by winning a place on the reception menus the executive chefs aboard HMAS Canberra will cook up for guests at international functions as it travels the globe.

Late last year, Canberra Business Chamber and HMAS Canberra signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together to promote the Canberra Region. A key commitment under the MoU, is for the two parties to collaborate to source local products for HMAS Canberra to use at functions they hold internationally and domestically.

“In July, HMAS Canberra will take part in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) international naval exercise. RIMPAC is the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise,” Canberra Business Chamber CEO, Robyn Hendry explained.

“This year’s RIMPAC will see 30 countries take part in the naval drill held in waters around the Hawaiian Islands. HMAS Canberra will represent our country and our region during RIMPAC.”

During RIMPAC, HMAS Canberra will host Australia’s official exercise reception. Nine hundred people from 30 countries will be invited to attend a function catered by the crew.

“HMAS Canberra wants to source food and wine for this event from the Canberra Region,” Ms Hendry said. “On 12 May 2016, Commanding Officer, Chris Smith, CSM RAN and other senior crew members, including the ship’s executive chefs, will travel to Canberra to test local products and choose those they will procure for this event.”

Local businesses are invited to show off the produce and wine they can offer during a tasting event being held at the National Convention Centre from 12-2 pm.

“We know how good our locally-produced food and wine is – now we want businesses to embrace this chance to prove this to representatives of HMAS Canberra and subsequently the world,” Ms Hendry said.

“I urge anyone in the Canberra Region who is proud of the quality of the food products or wine they produce to attend the showcase at the Convention Centre and make the most of this opportunity.

“RIMPAC is just the first of many international functions HMAS Canberra will hold and at each they will be sharing tastes from our region. We hope guests will be as impressed by our local food and wine as we are and talk-up Canberra Region products to others.

“Canberra Business Chamber would like to once again thank the HMAS Canberra crew for their service and commitment to promoting our region.”

Any suppliers wishing to take part in the showcase on 12 May should email Kate Holland.
