Canberra coming of age as regional events hub

Art exhibitions, Floriade, theatre and sport – the list of events bringing visitors to the ACT continues to grow as Canberra establishes itself as a serious drawcard for the region.

“In recent months we have had the Canberra Ladies Classic, which attracted professional golfers from over 30 countries around the world and lots of fans to the Territory, the Fed Cup World Group II First Round, Hyper Real at the National Gallery, and of course the ACT was chosen as the location for the first leg of the hugely successful MAMMA MIA! The Musical Australian tour,” Canberra Business Chamber CEO, Robyn Hendry praised.

For the ACT, visitor numbers have been growing and tourism contributes around $2bn and 16,000 jobs to our economy each year. Of the nearly 5 million visitors who came to the ACT in the year ending June 2017, the majority were domestic tourists.

“Events bring visitors from across the country to Canberra and encourage them to explore our region while they are here.”

This week two of the amazing powerhouses who played key roles in bringing some of these major events to the Canberra Region will provide insight into the business of arts and sports at an event being hosted by Canberra Business Chamber on Wednesday 28 February.

Speaking at the Back to Business event will be Louise Withers, co-producer of the Australian production of MAMMA MIA! The Musical, and Jayne Hrdlicka, President and Chair of Tennis Australia.

“I believe we sometimes forget that events – like theatre and sport – are businesses and have to be run like businesses,” Ms Hendry said. “Yet Jayne and Louise are highly regarded as two of the nation’s most successful business people.”

“There is much that can be learned from those who run large events: from business essentials, through to marketing, finance and collaboration. This is an opportunity for businesses of all types and size to gain valuable insights.”
