The Canberra Business Chamber congratulates Anthony Albanese and local representatives Senator Katy Gallagher, Dr Andrew Leigh, Mr David Smith, and Ms Alicia Payne on the election of a Labor government.

“We congratulate Mr Albanese and the Labor party on winning the 2022 election,” said Chief Executive Graham Catt.

“We have built very positive working relationships with our local Labor representatives and look forward to continuing those positive engagements with them as representatives of a newly formed Labor government.”

“The highest priority for the territory’s small and medium businesses is addressing the acute labour and skill shortages that are impacting productivity and putting a handbrake on growth.”

“Local business will also be looking to the new Labor government for urgent action to help ease the rising costs and supply chain bottlenecks that are holding back business. In the longer term, our members are seeking changes that make it easier to do business with the Commonwealth Government and streamline regulatory settings,” Mr Catt said.

The latest ABS statistics show that there are now over 31,000 businesses in the ACT, and over 97% of these are small and micro-operators. The private sector provides 64% (around 150,000) of the territory’s jobs.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our local and national economy and helping them to grow is essential to rebuilding our economy and driving our future prosperity.” Mr Catt said. “The business community stands ready to work with the new government to address the challenges ahead and capitalise on opportunities.”

“The Chamber also acknowledges the Coalition and Scott Morrison for their leadership over the past three years, in particular their crucial contributions to guiding the economy through unprecedented circumstances.”
