How’s your 2018 marketing road-map looking? 

Could you use ten hours of tailored specialised marketing support in February, fully subsidised?

Small businesses along the Stage 1 light rail corridor have access to this Marketing Masterclass Series.

Presenter and specialist consultant, Chris Edwards and Southern Region Business Enterprise Advisor, Janine Linklater, will assist you to refine or develop a clear, cohesive marketing plan to strengthen your business in 2018.

No-one knows your business better than you. We realise that you are busy working IN your business and don’t have lots time to spend working ON your business.

We have designed this marketing workshop to be flexible and personally tailored for practical marketing outcomes specific to your business.


This support is available at no cost for qualifying businesses, through the Light Rail Business Link Program, and consists of:

Two evening group sessions over two nights (8 hours total)
MONDAY Feb 5th and 19th 5:30pm – 9:30pm  (must be available for both nights)

You will have dedicated time with experienced support to develop or refine your individual 2018 marketing strategy, including practical and inexpensive marketing solutions and actions for you to implement.

1-1 marketing coaching (up to three hours, to booked individually during the first workshop)

Expert marketing consultants give you a perspective on ways to improve all aspects of your marketing strategy, including a review of measuring ROI and marketing budget: someone to bounce ideas off, keep you on track and accountable for your business marketing goals.

Promo videos to profile businesses along the corridor

As part of the Light Rail Business Link Program’s support for businesses along the light rail corridor filming has begun! We are excited to be working with 24 Mitchell business owners, helping them develop a tailored promotional video for their business. Here’s a behind the scene peek at Gumnut Dance, first cab off the filming rank with Overall Photography. Keep an eye out on social media for the videos as they become available, and like or share them to support our local business communities.

Help your customers stay up to date on construction

Have you thought about how to best help your clients and customers navigate light rail construction? One way is to regularly update details of roadworks around your business in your communications including on your social media pages to help with finding the easiest routes and parking options.

City Renewal Authority to develop places people wan to be

From 1 January 2018 responsibility for administering the $1.8 million City Centre Marketing and Improvements Levy will transfer from ‘In the City Canberra’ to the City Renewal Authority (CRA).

CRA is tasked with renewal of the City and Northbourne Avenue corridor and delivering a vibrant city centre, with high-quality urban renewal delivering places where people want to be.

“Canberra is a wonderful city and the precinct is already undergoing significant transformation and growth, with a large amount of development already happening in the city centre, along Northbourne Avenue and in Dickson. We need to take advantage of this opportunity to make sure this development results in a precinct that is sustainable, attractive, vibrant, connected and accessible to even more people than it is today.” said the CRA Chair, Dr Michael Easson.

Current City Renewal programs include developing a Haig Park masterplan, progressing City to the Lake with stage two of the West Basin boardwalk, city activation and the continuation of the Asset Recycling Initiative.

Award winning urban thinker and planner, Malcolm Snow was appointed Chief Executive of the City Renewal Authority in late August this year. Mr Snow previously headed the National Capital Authority for five years.

He will lead the organisation as it commences work on improving the liveability and vitality of the city centre through the planning and delivery of a diverse range of events, capital works upgrades, public realm and amenity improvements and stakeholder partnerships.

Support for your business

Did you know the Light Rail Business Link Program is here to assist you, to mitigate any impact light rail construction might have on your business and to help you adapt.

As one element of that support, the Light Rail Business Link Program will cover the costs for business along the corridor to access an ASBAS Business Advisor and get tailored feedback, advice and training across the following business streams as relevant:

  1. Funding avenues and financial analysis
  2. Building your business
  3. Making the most of your talent and team
  4. Management capabilities
  5. Digital engagement implementation

This includes an introductory support consultation and up to six sessions. Additional or specialised support may then be available and funded by the Light Rail Business Link Program depending on need and availability.

Well-being and mental health for business owners

As a small business owner, or sole trader, you can face a range of unique challenges that can affect your well-being and mental health and the mental health of your staff.

Running your own business can be hugely rewarding, but for many small business owners having sole responsibility for the company’s success or failure can take its toll on your health. Stress, depression or anxiety can have a negative impact on your quality of life and ability to run your business. This can affect the people who are involved with your business including employees, contractors, partners and clients.

While it can be tempting to focus all of your time and attention on your business, it’s also essential that you take care of yourself. Your mental health is essential , so it’s important to learn how to recognise warning signs or ‘red flags’ that may suggest you need to reach out for support. Common warning signs include:

  • finding it hard to concentrate
  • avoiding necessary day-to-day tasks and obligations
  • feeling irritable, stressed or teary
  • constantly thinking of work, even during personal time
  • being unable to sleep
  • disconnecting from friends and family
  • changing eating and/or drinking habits

There’s a number of organisations that can provide information and support to help you with your wellbeing and mental health:

The ATO understands circumstances can sometimes affect meeting your tax and super obligations and details support options available. You can speak with them directly, or ask someone to speak with them on your behalf. They encourage business owners to speak with them as early as possible to solve the problem before the situation escalates.

Heads Up – a Beyondblue and Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance initiative that provides business owners with free tools and resources to look after their mental health at work and achieve a mentally healthy workplace.

Business in Mind – a program developed by the University of Tasmania focusing on mental health especially tailored to small and medium business owners.

Mates in Construction – a charitable organisation focused on reducing the high level of suicide among Australian construction workers.

EveryMan Australia – Counselling for men aged 18+.

Beyondblue – learn more about anxiety, depression and suicide prevention, or talk through your concerns with their support service.

Lifeline Australia – a national charity providing Australians experiencing a personal crisis with access to 24-hour support and suicide prevention services.

Suicide Call Back Service – provides free national telephone and online counselling for anyone affected by suicide.

Light Rail Business Link is a program delivered by Canberra Business Chamber (CBC), working closely with the ACT Government’s Transport Canberra to build links between Government, the local business community, and Canberra Metro during the construction of Light Rail in Canberra. Acting as a conduit between stakeholder groups, CBC ensures opportunities for local business are maximised and any concerns are communicated. CBC works proactively to mitigate impacts to business along the light rail corridor through ongoing communications, industry collaboration and business support programs.
